Descarbonization plan

Prosegur Cash launches a decarbonization plan 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement Objectives

Prosegur Cash started its decarbonisation strategy in 2019 through the transformation of its light and armoured fleet. Thus, 401 armoured units were deactivated as part of a plan for the permanent renewal of the heavy fleet, identifying those vehicles that present higher fuel consumption, due to their age or state of conservation, with the aim of reducing the impact on the carbon footprint and streamline fleet costs.

During 2020, Prosegur Cash reached a milestone in the heavy industrial fleet with the commissioning of twelve ECO hybrid armour in Spain and the world's first 100% electric and zero emissions armour in Germany.

In February 2021, Prosegur and Prosegur Cash joined The Climate Pledge with the goal of becoming net zero carbon by 2040, a decade before the goal of the Paris Agreement 2050. It is a project launched by Amazon in association with Global Optimism in the fight against climate change.

In line with all these actions, in 2021, Prosegur Cash begins offsetting the CO2 generated by all our operations in Europe through an offsetting project in Brazil, one of our main geographies, and which is endorsed and verified by one of the most recognized international standards.

The project aims to reduce emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more harmful than CO2, from municipal waste treated at the CTR Santa Rosa landfill in Brazil. This landfill is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in the municipality of Seropédica, very close to the city of Rio de Janeiro. So far, this project has prevented the emission of more than 2.5 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project

This project encompasses the implementation and operation of a pioneering initiative that promotes the collection and use of gas at the Central Santa Rosa landfill.

The objective of the CPA-1 CTR of the Santa Rosa landfill is to avoid 50% GHG emissions into the atmosphere by capturing and burning the methane generated by the decomposition of organic waste from the landfill and generating electricity through it. An important part of the landfill gas is used as renewable fuel for the generation of electricity from waste from the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro, Seropedica and Itaguaí.

In addition, the Project is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and promotes significant positive impacts that are perfectly aligned with them.

We take care of the environment

By collecting and destroying / using landfill gas, the risk of explosions at the landfill is minimized at the same time.

The implementation and operation of the project has represented a transfer and innovation in technology (SDG 9).

Positive thinking

This project provides affordable and non-polluting energy which translates into higher quality and well-being for the population in terms of reducing pollution as well as decent work and economic growth for the local community (SDG 3, 7 and 8), generating in as a whole, a positive environmental impact of great significance in terms of sustainability (SDG 13).
